Bring your loved ones, park your car, and get ready for a night of family fun!!
MDC will be hosting Cinema Under The Stars In Your Cars on Friday May 29th!
Our feature film will be Dolphin Tale, the story of Winter the dolphin who lost her real tail and gained a prosthetic one. As a bonus, preceding the film will be a special presentation by Teresa Jablonski of Hubbs-Seaworld Research Institute. Did you know that Winter was rescued right here in Mosquito Lagoon? Jablonski was one of Winter’s rescuers and will be discussing the experience with our attendees.
From Jablonski: “Winter’s story began on a chilly December morning in 2005. A fisherman discovered a young dolphin calf severely entangled in the rope of a crab trap. The rope was wrapped tightly around the dolphin’s tail, encircled her body and was bridled through her mouth, leaving her struggling to swim or surface to breathe. The fisherman removed the ropes but the calf sat still at the surface, exhausted. Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute arrived on site after receiving the call from Florida Fish and Wildlife. We supported her in the water, kept her calm and shaded her from the sun. Due to her injuries, and because she was orphaned, she was brought in for rehabilitation at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Despite veterinarians, best efforts, the loss of blood flow caused her to lose her tail. She was fitted with a prosthetic tail to help replicate natural movement and to build muscle. Through expert care and her will to survive, Winter continues to inspire the public at the aquarium and around the world.”
